(Arrington, VA) – Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), is currently offering discounts to eligible households in accordance with the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) included in the COVID-19 Relief Bill. The benefit provides funding to enable internet providers like Firefly to offer discounted internet service to households in need, even if the household is already receiving Lifeline assistance. The discount can be applied to existing Firefly accounts as well as to new ones in areas where fiber is in place and service is available.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a discount on the price of broadband for up to $50 per month for eligible households, and up to $75 for households on Tribal lands. A household is eligible if their income is at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, experienced a substantial loss of income due to job loss or furlough since February 29, 2020, or if they participate in a government benefit program like Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Pell Grant, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). To find more information about eligibility, visit www.fireflyva.com/ebb.

Firefly President, Gary Wood, is grateful for the assistance for families in rural Virginia. “Families need the internet for remote school, work and business and many cannot afford to make that happen with their current budgets. This benefit will ease the stress of figuring out how to pay for the internet function in this new virtual world while still struggling to rebound from the hard economic hits from the pandemic.”

The EBB Program is a temporary federal government subsidy that reduces the broadband internet access service bill for the household and, at the conclusion of the program, the household will be subject to the provider’s undiscounted general rates, terms, and conditions if the household continues to subscribe to the service. To get started, visit https://getemergencybroadband.org/how-to-apply/ for complete details and to apply. Once a household has applied and been approved, Firefly will verify that the EBB is available for the customer and apply the discount to the broadband service.
